10 photos to celebrate Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary's 10-year love story

Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary's paths first crossed at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Despite the thousands of miles between them, their love continued to blossom after the prince returned to Denmark with the couple keeping in touch over letters, emails and phone calls.

Giving everything up for her future husband — her house, her family, her friends and her job — Mary travelled to Denmark in secret to accept Frederik's hand in marriage. The Australian beauty impressed the nation as she built her new life, learning the language, getting used to living in the public eye and taking up residence in AmalienborgQueen Margrethe II's official residence where Frederik had an apartment.

Frederik and Mary tied the knot on 14 May 2004 at the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen. The future King didn't attempt to hide his emotions from the hundreds of people who attended the ceremony and the millions who watched from around the world.

Upon seeing his beautiful bride, Frederik took out a handkerchief and wiped away his tears. The world smiled as they saw the military-trained prince transform before their eyes into a tender, loving man. "From today, Mary is mine and I am hers," he said at the altar. "I love her and I will protect her with all my love."

Ten years have passed and the couple have welcomed four children together — Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine — but it seems like only yesterday when Frederik and Mary first fell in love.

On 14 May 2004, the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen witnessed the beautiful wedding of Frederik and Mary. As soon as the prince saw his future wife arrive, he was overcome by emotion and wiped away a few tears.

The Australian-born beauty wowed in a gown by Danish dressmaker Uffe Frank, and completed her royal look with a spectacular tiara gifted to her by Frederik's mother Queen Margrethe II. The day was filled with touching moments, from the couple's romantic kiss on the balcony of the Amalienborg palace to the words Frederik dedicated to his wife at the reception.

Throughout the years, Frederik and Mary have shown just how much fun they are, as was reflected during their summer 2011 tour when the couple visited Hirtschals — one of the largest fishing ports in the country.

Frederik was quick to don a wetsuit and swim among the largest fish in the aquarium, and while in the water, the heir apparent spotted his wife through the glass and was quick to motion blowing a kiss to her as Mary laughed and put her hands to the glass.

"I think growing older is a beautiful thing," said Mary at an interview in 2012, before her birthday. "I don't think about my physical age. I find myself in the most wonderful period of my life.

"At 40, you know exactly what life is about. It's about being in the here and now, but I also look forward to where my journey will take me."

After living apart from her family in Sydney for seven years, Mary, who lost her mother when she was just a young girl, gave it all up for love and moved to Denmark to be with her Prince Charming.

Prince Frederik has always felt love and support from his country, however it is his wife Princess Mary who is the nation's sweetheart.

Day by day Frederik and Mary's love has grown stronger and the couple have shown this on several occasions, be it at a gala, a dance, a sporting event or a family affair. They always find time to share a tender moment.

Spontaneous, compassionate and kind... Frederik and Mary are part of the new wave of royals who have given freshness to traditional monarchy.

The coupe have a normal marriage, day to day worries and do everything they can to make sure their children grow up healthy and happy, on top of knowing that one day the future of Denmark will be in their hands.

Some couples have so much chemistry and such a deep bond that it only takes a look for them to understand each other.

Since the beginning of their relationship, Frederik and Mary have shown that they make a good team and can achieve any goals they set out to do — first and foremost to have the family of their dreams and love each other as much as they did from day one.

Frederik and Mary share a deep bond, and there are no words to describe how much they love each other.

Christian, Isabella and twins Vincent and Josephine have lit up their parents' life. There's no doubt that Frederik and Mary want nothing more than their children to have a happy and normal upbringing given their royal surroundings.
